At the same time Matilda Bay was developing the art of specialty brewing in Western Australia, there was a similar phenomenon happening in the US, particularly in the North West (Washington State and Oregon).
The brewers of America's North West have access to the locally grown hops of the region and over a number of years have developed what is probably today's most contemporary beer style, the North West Pale Ale.
Based on the traditional India Pale Ales and Pale Ales from England, the North West style has its own unique character driven mostly by an assertive bitterness.
Our Brewers Reserve Alpha Pale Ale is very much in line with the beers from North America's North west - except we've put a Matilda Bay spin on it.
Why Alpha? Because this beer is all about the hops - and it's the alpha acids in the hops that give you the bitterness.
Alpha won more medals than any other beer at the 2003 Australian International Beer Awards, an achievement we are proud of given the intricacies of brewing this style.
