Rooftop Red Lager

"Matilda Bay's small-batch Rooftop Red Lager provides refined aroma from German hops, interesting color from special malts, a caramel palate and citrus and stonefruit background hints"

-Vic Crossland, West Australian

"This is an easy-drinking red lager which would be the perfect introduction to someone who doesn't usually like dark beer"

-Gerard Connors, Time Off

"With more body than your average Aussie lager, Rooftop nevertheless is a comfortable session beer"

-Vic Crossland, West Australian

Rooftop takes its influences from Vienna-style lagers, an elegant beer style with a subtle malt-hop balance, created in Vienna during the early 1840’s by pioneers of bottom fermentation. It was the Vienna-style lager that inspired the Marzen beers which are traditionally drunk during Oktoberfest – a festival which began as a wedding celebration in 1810 when Princess Therese was married to the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig.

Following in the footsteps of these brewing pioneers, we insist on using only the finest ingredients, which are crucial to its delicate character.

Rooftop’s distinctive red hue and full, refreshing flavour are created by small-batch brewing using specially selected lightly-toasted German malts - carared and melanoidin. The aromatic Hersbrucker hop, added to the kettle late in the boil, softens and balances Rooftop’s malts to deliver a smooth, delicate palate rich with hints of toffee and caramel.

Rooftop is full-bodied and malt-driven, but brewed so you can enjoy a few whatever the occasion.

The name “Rooftop” gets its inspiration from Paul Kelly's song ‘From a 727’ where he sings about looking over the red roofs of the city from a plane. So, as you descend over the suburbs on approach to the airport, many of the traditional homes have red tiled roofs. So red roofs, red beer, “Rooftop” red lager - easy !!

With the arrival of Rooftop, there are lots more opportunities to experiment with food and beer matches. The styles of malt used impart a delicious spiciness that is very food-friendly.

With a distinctive malt accent and dry finish, Rooftop is perfect with wood-fired pizza, egg noodles, spit-roast chicken and spicy foods. The sweet acidity of tomatoes can make most other brews taste too one-dimensional so match Rooftop with thick tomato sauces on pasta. Meals with roast meats are also great matches, the easy drinking style and floral hop notes complementing perfectly.

We also found Rooftop and “snag in bread” a great combination; a juicy barbequed bratwurst or Italian sausage in sourdough or rustic bread with a dab of mustard suits Rooftop like nothing else.
