The first thing you notice about our cider is the first taste — like a bite from a ripe Granny Smith apple. The next is the colour, a deep dark almost dirty russet colour. Hence ‘Dirty Granny’ cider.

It has a full rich flavour combined with a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity, and the crisp bite of whole apples. There is a certain amount of astringency in the aftertaste. It is crafted carefully so as to retain as much flavour and palate length as possible while also maintaining the refreshment.

Compared to other ciders, when poured Dirty Granny is a much darker, almost dirty rustic colour and the taste reminded us of a juicy, fresh green apple. We're not sure how we connected this to dirty grannies, but it just seemed to fit.

Recipe

DIRTY GRANNY MULLED CIDER

Ingredients
  • 2 bottles of Matilda Bay’s Dirty Granny Cider
  • 6 allspice berries
  • 8 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 vanilla bean pod cut in half length-ways
  • zest of 1/4 orange
  • 1 dessert spoon soft brown sugar
Method
  1. Place all ingredients in a pot and cover. Heat to just before boiling point and simmer for 30-45 minutes

  2. Serve in your favourite jam jar. Food match - Grandma’s Apple & Plum Crumble
